TANINA / SOUTH SUDAN
Nothing and no one is disposable.
We build pathways from disposability to dignity—turning waste into opportunity, skills into livelihoods, and community action into a more sustainable South Sudan.
The idea behind Tanina
“What if we saw value where others see something to throw away?
Tanina means “ours” in Juba Arabic. It is a simple word with a big belief: people and materials deserve a second look, and lasting change belongs to the communities who make it.
Our purpose
Where Tanina is going, and what we do to get there.
Our vision
A circular and sustainable society with improved waste management and dignified livelihoods.
Our mission
Create dignified jobs for waste collectors, provide environmental education and practical skills, and nurture a more sustainable environment through the proposed Wasaka Innovation Center and community action.
Where we want to begin
Turning ideas into practical action.
We believe meaningful change starts with communities, practical solutions and opportunities for people to participate. We are developing initiatives that connect responsible waste management, environmental education and circular innovation to build a more sustainable South Sudan.
From Waste to Worth
A proposed community initiative to encourage household waste separation, raise awareness about responsible waste management and strengthen collaboration between households and informal waste collectors.
Resource Managers as Environmental Educators
We envision trained waste pickers, recognized as Resource Managers, becoming environmental educators in schools and communities. By sharing practical knowledge about waste separation, recycling and responsible resource management, they can help people understand the value of discarded materials while promoting cleaner, more sustainable communities.
Our aim is to recognize the knowledge of Resource Managers, strengthen their capacity and create opportunities for them to contribute to environmental education.
The Wasaka Vision
A proposed community recycling and innovation hub where young people could develop practical skills, explore waste-to-value ideas and build the foundations for green enterprises.
Proposed: Wasaka Innovation Center
Skills are a pathway to possibility.
Education is more than a classroom. The proposed Wasaka Innovation Center will connect learning, environmental awareness and practical skills with the future young people want to build.

How we measure progress
We look beyond what gets collected.
We’re interested in what changes for people: safer work, stronger skills, more meaningful income and communities with the power to shape their own environment. Our impact framework follows the journey, not just the output.
Make it ours
A better future is something we build together.
Join us in making opportunity, dignity and a more sustainable South Sudan possible.
Stay in the loop
Good things grow through connection.
